If AS Monaco FC are still fighting with LOSC for second place and automatic qualification for the Champions League, they are playing like potential champions. On Saturday night at the Stade de la Route de Lorient, Emmanuel Rivière offered his side a 20th win of the season (his reaction). Never before have AS Monaco FC tallied 69 points after Week 33 of Ligue 1. Over the last decade, only three champions have counted more points at this stage of the competition (PSG in 2012-13 and OL in 2005-06 and 2006-07, see below)!
One last effort...
This season, this total isn't even enough to guarantee a place in the top three, even if AS Monaco FC remain favourites given their advantage over fourth-placed Saint-Etienne. LOSC are still there in third. While they still hold a six-point advantage over Lille in third, Les Rouge et Blanc may have to wait until the penultimate round of matches to be sure of finishing second. With five matches left, theirs is still everything to play for. They will have to fight to the very end to reach their season's main objective.
The record from 1997
In the 1996-97 term, Jean Tigana's side set a new club record 79 points in Ligue 1, a total that gave the club a sixth crown. Of the 15 points left on offer, Claudio Ranieri's side need to pick up ten to equal that record. It's also the total they need to be assured of hearing a certain UEFA theme music at the Stade Louis II next season...
