Just a week after returning to work, the Red & Whites played their first pre-season friendly against SNK Santz Pölten, 9th an d last-but-one side in the Austrian league. In stifling 36° heat, Leonardo Jardim went with a new-look side in a 4-4-2 formation: Benaglio - Glik, Raggi, Touré, Serrano - Fabinho, Traoré, Lopes, Bongiovanni - Carrillo, Saint-Maximin.
Lopes gets pre-season started
The French Champions wasted no time getting into the game, pushing forward and looking to work the combinations practised this week in training. A header from Gilk nearly put them in front inside six minutes, but it took until the 36th minute for the net to bulge, as Saint-Maximin provided an inch-perfect cut-back for Lopes to slam home a first time effort from the edge of the box.
Mboula in a flash
Leonardo Jardim sent out a whole new eleven for the start of the second half: Sy - A.Diallo, N’Doram, Gaspar, Jorge - Meïté, Tielemans, Dias, Mboula - Cardona, Sylla. A chance to see the new recruits in action, alongside some Academy youngsters who were quick to make their impression. In the 54th minute, Cardona fought to win possession in the area before setting up Sylla to slot home into the empty net. Fifteen minutes later, the lightning fast Mboula won the ball in his own half before racing clear of everyone and beating the 'keeper one on one. The end of the match was a quieter affair, with each side getting the chance to test out their moves. It was a winning start for AS Monaco, who face Rapid Vienna at 17.30 on Sunday.
