The gloves were off from the very start of this encounter. The first chance went to the home side, with a shot from Kurzawa that skimmed Lössl left-hand post (6 mins). Seconds later, Sankharé hit the bar with a header from a half-cleared free-kick. AS Monaco eventually made the breakthrough in the 8th minute, Carrasco beating Jakobsen on the left and crossing to the far post, where the waiting Berbatov placed a header past Lössl and into the net. There followed a slight lull in the action, but the Breton side had by no means thrown in the towel. Giresse had an effort off-target on 22 minutes, while Stekelenburg saved from Pied on 23 minutes.
Sankharé spurns a big chance
Guingamp kept up the pressure with a volley from Beauvue that flew well over (34 mins), before Sankharé missed a golden opportunity to draw his side level. Collecting a fine cross from Pied, he somehow hit the post with the goal at his mercy (34 mins). Moments later, Mandanne saw red following a bad-tempered altercation with Carvalho (35 mins). AS Monaco took advantage of their numerical superiority to create several chances before the break. Carrasco put a header wide on 38 minutes, while Raggi came close to capitalising after Lössl came for a cross and missed the ball (40 mins). Carrasco then fired in a powerful shot that the Guingamp 'keeper managed to palm away (41 mins), ensuring his side were still in the game as the referee blew for half-time .
Berbatov thwarted by Lössl
There was a stop-start feel to the early stages of the second-half. For the home side, Carvalho picked up a thigh injury and was forced off to be replaced by Fabinho. He was followed on 52 minutes by Bakayoko, who came off holding his hamstring after going into a challenge with Pied. Diallo was sent on in his place. The game had barely restarted when Carrasco had a sight of goal, but Lössl held onto his low shot. The Guingamp 'keeper then came out on top in a one-on-one with Berbatov (66 mins), following good work by Silva. On 70 minutes, the Bulgarian again found himself with only Lössl to beat, but got a nudge from Angoua that meant he was unable to direct the ball. Instead of the penalty he deserved, Berbatov was given a yellow card before being replaced by Martial.
Martial extends AS Monaco's lead
The wind seemed to have gone from the visitors' sails, but Giresse still was still a threat and looped in a header that brushed Stekelenburg's right-hand post (79 mins). On 86 minutes, Alioui struck a free-kick from out wide that flashed across the face of the Monaco goal, before Moutinho timed a tackle to perfection to dispossess Salibur on the edge of the area. The clock had ticked into added time when Kerbrat came within inches of putting through his own net as he attempted a clearance. Lössl then saved from Kurzawa, but Martial following up was able to stroke the ball home unopposed. The result was secure and the final whistle went before Guingamp had even taken the restart. Following their defeat at the hands of En Avant at the semi-final stage of the Coupe de France last season, AS Monaco claimed a measure of revenge to seal a spot in the last four of the Coupe de la Ligue.
