Falcao's fourth of the season
Determined to play the match on their own terms, Les Rouge et Blanc took the game by the throat right from the get-go. Moutinho was brought down barely 30 seconds after kick off, but Audard saved the Portuguese midfielder's resulting free-kick. The former Monaco 'keeper was caught out five minutes later when he brought down Falcao in the area to concede a penalty. The Colombian picked himself to slot home his fourth of the season, sending Audard the wrong way.
Fabinho hit the post
ASM FC went close to taking the game away from Lorient three minutes later when YFC failed to turn home Ocampos' cross to the back post. In the 22nd minute, Kurzawa sent in a teasing cross for Falcao, but El Tigre was just short. Lorient tried to battle their way out of their own half and had the ball in the back of the net from Diallo's header, only to see it correctly ruled out for offside in the 25th minute. With half an hour gone, Ocampos laid the ball into the path of the overlapping Fabinho and the Brazilian's ferocious shot cannoned off the near post. The first half ended with the home side leading 1-0.
Audard denied Ocampos
After the restart, Falcao was released through on goal by Moutinho, but as he checked inside Audard, the defence scrambled the ball clear. Jouffre then gave the defence a scare with a shot wide from the edge of the area. In the 61st minute Audard produced a brilliant stop to deny Ocampos, and then saw YFC tackled just as he was about to pull the trigger in the 67th minute.
ASM cruised to final whistle
The rhythm dropped off in the final 20 minutes. AS Monaco FC controlled the game as Falcao was replaced by Rivière and Ferreira Carrasco made way for James. The last real chance of the match came the way of Lorient in stoppage time as Abidal got back just in time to deny Aboubakar. The slender victory was enough to see Les Rouge et Blanc move back to the top of the table ahead of their summit clash next Sunday away to Paris Saint-Germain.
