Irvin Cardona showed nerves of steel to convert the 90th minute penalty that secured promotion in this play-off second leg. Cercle Bruges had led 2-0 through Mercier (30') and Crysan (35') against Beerschot Wilrijk until the 84th minute, when Van Hyfte levelled the aggregate scores. A 2-1 win would not have been enough for Cercle, as Beerschot Wilrijk's 1-0 home win in the first leg last week would have seen them through on away goals. But in the 88th minute, Cercle were awarded a penalty!!! Irvin Cardona, the "Monegasque" goalscorer and AS Monaco academy product, took responsibility and duly fired home to secure promotion, fulfilling Cercle's "objective for the season". Nardi, Tormin and Cardona all started this play-off second leg... Congratulations to Cercle, AS Monaco's feeder club, on their return to the top tier of Belgian football.
