For this third friendly fixture, Leonardo Jardim went with the following starting line-up: Subasic - Touré, Glik, Jemerson, Jorge - Lemar, Fabinho, Meité, Lopes - Carrillo, Saint-Maximin.
Stoke City open the scoring
The Red & Whites carved out the first big chance of the game inside the fourth minute, as Saint-Maximin was played in behind the defence and pulled the ball back for Lemar to slam a shot against the bar. But it was Stoke who took the lead in the 10th minute through Berahino, who slotted home from close-range after Johnson’s effort rebounded off the post.
Leonardo Jardim’s men then took control of proceedings and dominated, but the English side’s defence intervened several times to delay the equaliser. The leveller finally came in the 34th minute, when Lemar was awarded a penalty after being scythed down in the box. Fabinho converted coolly from the sport to bring the Red & Whites back on terms (34’).
Five minutes later, Saint-Maximin got in behind the defence again, beat his man and side-footed past the ‘keeper. Having been behind, AS Monaco went in at the break with a well-earned 2-1 lead.
At half-time, Benaglio, Serrano, Tielemans and Mbappé came on for Subasic, Jorge, Lopes and Lemar. Stoke City equalised quickly through Diouf, who seized on a good through-ball (47’). The Monegasques then looked to regain their advantage, first through Mbappé who was set up well by Tielemans but lost his one-on-one with the ‘keeper (49’), and later through Carrillo who headed wide of the target (52’).
Falcao and Sidibé decisive
In the 63rd minute, Falcao, Sidibé, Mboula, N’Doram and Dias all joined the fray, and three minutes later, Sidibé crossed for Falcao to score with only his second touch!
The Red & Whites enjoyed much the better of the latter stages. After Stoke failed to deal with a corner, Dias found N’Doram who netted AS Monaco’s fourth goal to seal the result.
The win is a second success in three matches for Leonardo Jardim’s men. Next up are PSV Eindhoven, at 17.00 on Sunday. The pre-season preparations continue!
