In a tough Group D, Costa Rica with Joel Campbell, upset 2010 semi-finalists Uruguay, 3-1. Cavani had opened the scoring for Uruguay from the penalty spot in the first half. Italy beat England 2-1 thanks to goals from Marchisio (35') and Balotelli (50'). Sturridge had equalised for England (37') in the first half.
