The game started quietly as both teams took the time to size each other up, before Ketkéophomphone had the first shot in the 7th minute, failing to find the target. El Shaarawy responded with an effort of his own in the 10th minute, with similar results. Ketkéophomphone was back in action again shortly after, sending in a powerful strike from a tight angle on the right of the area, that Subasic pushed behind for a corner. The Red & Whites began to dominate possession more and more as the half wore on, but chances were at a premium against a well-drilled SCO defence.
Pasalic finds the opener!
In the 20th minute, Traoré launched himself at a Pasalic cross but was just unable to reach the ball. The deadlock was finally broken from a set piece in the 35th minute. After Moutinho delivered a long free-kick into the Angers box, Traoré headed the ball down for Pasalic to sweep home! The Croatian international's second goal in Ligue 1 gave the Red & Whites a half-time lead, as in the previous home match against Lyon...
El Shaarawy and Lopes miss chances to extend the lead
This time, however, AS Monaco would maintain their lead. They even came close to extending it at the start of the second half. On 47 minutes, Lopes sent El Shaarawy clean through, but Butelle in the SCO goal stuck out a foot to block the Italian's effort. Referee Mr Varela awarded a goal kick, when it should really have been a corner...Three minutes later, Lopes collected a drilled cross from Elderson in acres of space in front of goal, but contrived to miss his kick! He attempted to remedy that miss in the 54th minute, but Butelle turned his effort behind for a corner.
A controlled conclusion
AS Monaco remained in control, although they did have a brief scare when Sunu found himself in space at the far post. Fortunately, the Angers striker missed his header when he had only Subasic to beat (64 mins). With the clock ticking into the final fifteen minutes, Moutinho spurned a good opportunity from a free-kick, hitting the wall with his shot. Angers threatened again through Ndoye, but the midfielder was unable to direct his header on target. The score remained 1-0, allowing AS Monaco to secure a great result and bag their first home win of the season in Ligue 1. Attention now turns to the UEFA Europa League, with the long trip to Baku on Thursday for the return fixture against Qarabag.
