Debut Ligue 1 goal for YFC
The first half was exclusively in favour of Les Monegasques. Pouncing on a poorly weighted back pass, Joao Moutinho found himself one-on-one with Ruffier for the first big chance of the match in the 8th minute. Unfortunately, the Portugal international lost his battle with the former Monaco 'keeper. After a shot off target from Obbadi in the 13th minute, it was Ferreira-Carrasco who opened the scoring on 15 minutes. Moutinho started the move, winning back possession and finding Falcao who in turn passed to James. With a magnificent outside of the left foot pass, the Colombian released YFC and the young Belgian slipped the ball past Ruffier to score his first ever goal in Ligue 1.
YFC and Ruffier again found themselves face to face in the 19th minute, but this time Les Verts' 'keeper came out on top. The first chance for Saint-Etienne arrived midway through the first half when Hamouma got the better of Abidal and Carvalho but not Subasic. In the 25th minute, Ruffier turned behind a shot from the omnipresent James, and then Tabanou lobbed Subasic with a ball that shaved the top corner. The chances all but dried up in final minutes of the first half, but ASM remained in the driving seat. Falcao earned a free-kick just before the break, but Moutinho's effort was repelled by the wall. The 1-0 lead at the break was the least Monaco deserved.
Hamouma on the limit of offside
But matters changed at the start of the second half. In an effort to turn the match around, Les Verts piled the pressure on Les Rouge et Blanc defence after the restart. The new approach paid dividends when Cohade played in Hamouma, right on the limit of offside. One-on-one with Subasic, the former Caen flyer equalised and Claudio Ranieri's men had to do it all over again. It was an even match early in the second period, but ASM slowly wrestled back control of proceedings, only to be denied by the solid visiting defence. On the hour mark, Ruffier turned behind another effort from James, excellent in his third start of the season. Subasic also saved his side, saving against Gradel in the 84th minute.
Winner from Ocampos
After providing the assist for the first goal, James was again decisive in the 86th minute. With his right boot he crossed hard in front of Ruffier's goal. Having come on just three minutes earlier to replace Ferreira-Carrasco, Ocampos met the cross at the back post to give his team the win. While Ruffier punched out a final James free-kick with two minutes left. The goalkeeper had to accept defeat on his return to Louis II. Today it was from the wings that AS Monaco FC found the solution to claim all three points. Two assists from James, and the first goals in Ligue 1 to YFC and Ocampos, and first place on the league ladder ahead of the international break for Les Rouge et Blancs... an excellent evening that confirms the club's excellent return to the top flight.
