The Red & Whites got proceedings under way in a fine drizzle, and were the first to threaten. With just three minutes on the clock, Boschilia picked up the ball in the box and looked to beat Carrasso with a shot aimed at the far corner, but his effort lacked power and the Bordeaux ‘keeper was able to hold onto the ball easily. Three minutes later, the Brazilian was at the heart of the action again, this time collecting a half-clearance and trying his luck once more, only to screw his effort well off target.
Nardi vs Ounas
The home side woke from their slumber on the quarter-hour mark, Ounas firing in a knuckle shot from 20 yards that the alert Nardi kept out with a fine punch. A minute later though, Ounas got the better of the Monegasque ‘keeper. After excellent work down the left, the midfielder placed a curling strike inside Nardi’s near post to put the home side in front. In the 31st minute, Ounas went it alone again and danced through the visitors’ defence, but saw his shot turned away by Nardi. A second goal for Bordeaux looked on the cards .
The Monegasques did their best to respond, and on 29 minutes, Boschilia drilled an effort at goal following a one-two with Silva, but failed to find the target. In the 40th minute, Mbappé was sent through by a wonderful pass from Fabinho and found himself one-on-one with Carrasso, but could only slide the ball past the post. After half-time, the Red & Whites went close again as Silva laid on a perfect ball for Raggi at the far post. The Italian was unmarked but his volley went wide of the mark.
Rolan kills off Monagasque hopes
The visitors’ fightback didn’t last long. On 50 minutes, a lightning counter-attack by Bordeaux ended with Rolan hammering in a shot that Nardi turned behind for a corner. Eight minutes later, a stray pass from Pasalic in a central position and a misjudgement from Wallace allowed Rolan to intercept and coolly slot past the powerless U21 ‘keeper to put Bordeaux two goals up.
A match to forget
Bordeaux were not about to let up and a few minutes later André Poko delivered a cross from the right, with Cheick Diabaté controlling the ball on his chest and volleying towards goal from point blank range, Nardi making a point-blank save. Monegasque hopes suffered another blow in the 67th minute when Mario Pasalic was forced off after picking up an injury in a challenge with Adam Ounas. The minutes stretched on until the coup de grace was applied in the 88th. From a corner on the right, Wallace could only flick the ball on at the far post for Saivet, who headed in to give Bordeaux a 3-0 lead. AS Monaco’s Coupe de la Ligue run ends in the last 16. Their next fixture is at 20.00 on Saturday, when they take on ESTAC with the chance of going second in the table ahead of the winter break!
