There were plenty of empty seats at the Matmut Atlantique stadium as this game got under way. The Girondins were the first into action, with two efforts from Khazri (4 mins) and Crivelli (10 mins) deflected behind for corners. From the second of these, Pallois headed just over the bar. Khazri then seized on a slip by Carvalho to run in on goal. Forced wide by Subasic, the Tunisian still tried to find the net from a narrow angle, but Raggi had followed up and cleared off the line. After that scare, AS Monaco fought their way into the game. On 20 minutes, Costa registered the Red & Whites' first shot on goal, but Carrasso was in the way. Moments later, Carrillo fired in a shot on the turn that the Bordeaux 'keeper tipped onto the post (22 mins).
Three fatal minutes
He was unable to prevent AS Monaco from taking the lead shortly after that, however, as Silva drilled across a cross-shot that Carrasso could only parry out to Costa, who tucked home the opener with aplomb. Carrasso was forced off with injury, to be replaced by Prior. The visitors were now in control of proceedings, but their defences were breached towards the end of the first half. In the 36th minute, Khazri sparked a counter-attack that ended with the ball finding its way to Maurice-Belay just outside the box. He took it on his left foot and beat Subasic with the help of a slight deflection off the unwitting Toulalan. Three minutes later, Yambere showed a poacher's instinct to put his side in front. Khazri struck a free kick from the right, Pallois saw his header blocked by Carvalho and the ball fell to Yambere who scrambled it into the net to give Bordeaux a half-time lead.
Plasil adds the third
Worse was to come, as the home side increased their advantage just after half-time. Crivelli intercepted a back pass from Moutinho, drew the Monegasque centre backs and played in Plasil down the left (48 mins). The former AS Monaco player slotted past Subasic to give the home side breathing space. The Red & Whites looked to hit back immediately, seeing much more of the ball but failing to threaten the Bordeaux goal. Pasalic put Costa through, but the Portuguese winger was tackled just as he was preparing to shoot from the left side of the box (52 mins). Elderson then found himself with the ball in a similar position after a cross from the right, but his headed pass failed to find a teammate. Despite being on top, AS Monaco were unable to find a way through against a Bordeaux side always looking to counter. In the 67th minute, Crivelli hit the top of the crossbar with a header from a right-wing cross.
Sometimes it just won't go in...
The minutes ticked by, but AS Monaco refused to give up. In the 79th minute, Moutinho flicked the ball on for Carrillo who found himself with space in the area, but Prior managed to get a hand to his well-struck low shot which shaved the outside of the post. The Argentine had another chance in the 85th minute, this time scooping a side-footed effort over the Bordeaux bar. El Shaarawy, on as a substitute for Costa just before the hour mark, then nutmegged Poko brilliantly before curling the ball inches past the same left post (87 mins)! Seconds later, the Italian chanced his arm again, but this time Prior made the save. In added time, Elderson too came close to reducing the deficit, but his close-range strike came back off the right-hand post! The result saw AS Monaco beaten on their travels for the first time in Ligue 1 this season, while they dropped three places in the table (to 9th). The Red & Whites are now four points off a top three spot, and five points behind second-placed Lyon...
