Germain put the pressure on
There was a festive atmosphere at a Gerland decked out in the yellow and black colours of amateur side Chasselay, and a little Rouge et Blanc in Monaco's travelling end. Chasselay were immediately under pressure as Jaccard denied Germain in the third minute afte a run from Carrasco. Germain was back in the heart of the action in the 11th minute with a good header from a Falcao cross. The Colombian then laid the ball back for Moutinho who couldn't hit the target from the edge of the area. Chasselay first attack came from Giuly in the 25th minute, but the former Asémiste captain couldn't get the better of Isimat.
Falcao scored before getting injured...
Les Rouge et Blanc had to wait until the half hour to finally open the scoring. A shot from Ocampos was turned behind for a corner, and Moutinho found the head of Germain who laid it back for Falcao to fire ASM in front. Ocampos had another chance in the 34th minute, before Falcao saw Jaccard steal the ball away as he prepared to head home. Unfortunately, just minutes before the break, the Colombian needed to be stretchered off after a rugged challenge in the Chasselay penalty box. It tarnished the opening period.
Rivière doubles the lead
After the break, Rivière was introduced in attack and Le Martiniquais starred. But it was Chasselay that had the first chance when Romero had to work hard to keep out Mauvernay's spectacular bicycle kick as the home side looked to equalise (54'). Jaccard then did likewise to keep out Rivière's header, before he was saved by the post as YFC's missile bounced back into play (55' and 56'). Just after the hour mark Rivière fired wide after good lead up play from Moutinho. But he had more success in the 66th minute when he raced onto another Moutinho offering to double the lead.
Dirar with the assist
Chasselay weren't going down without a fight. After another miss from Rivière, Giuly drew another save from Romero (69'). But it was Rivière who made the game save in the 75th minute. Perfectly set up by Dirar, back from injury, he powerfully fired beyond Jaccard for his second of the night. After a Giuly free-kick shaved the post (83'), Carrasco somehow missed the unmissable from a Rivière pass (85'). There were more chances for Elderson and Carrasco, with a free-kick, but there was no further change to the scoring. AS Monaco FC won 3-0 and qualified for the last-16 of the competition. But at the final whistle, all attentions turned to Radamel Falcao, stretchered off at the end of the first half...
