Two cautious teams took the park in Lille's stadium that had the roof shut for the occasion. Both sides were focused on the task at hand and no quarter was asked or given in a tight and prudent opening. The home side had the first chance of the match when Balmont's free-kick was headed over by left-back Souaré. On the 15-minute mark, ASM obtained consecutive corners, without creating any real danger in front of the LOSC goal. Lille also had a corner that Kalou headed over Subasic's goal. Other than those few half-chances there wasn't too much to get excited about.
Roux in the right spot
In the 27th minute, the match turned on its head. Eric Abidal was fouled near the corner flag, but the free-kick was not awarded and from the resulting corner, Roux turned home Basa's header. The LOSC had opened the scoring with the first real chance of the match. It was a tough blow for a Monaco side that had controlled the match up until that point. Ferreira-Carrasco let fly with a long-range effort in the 34th but Enyeama saved without difficulty. The Belgian then chased down a Kjaer back pass (36'). He blocked Enyeama's clearance and the ball fell to Falcao whose lob was too strong and flew over the Lille goal. Lille led 1-0 at the break.
A deadly counterattack
After the break, Rivière replaced Ferreira-Carrasco. In the 53rd minute, referee Mr Bien missed another clear free-kick in Monaco's favour when Kurzawa was fouled on the edge of the area. ASM were right on top and looking good to turn things around. After a series of Lille corners, the Enyeama show began. Firstly he denied Rivière one-on-one (67'). He then produced a magnificent save to turn behind a shot from Falcao (70'). On the counterattack, Lille hit the after burners and Mavuba set up Roux for a simple finish. LOSC had a two-goal lead in a match in which Subasic only had one save to make! That save came in the 73rd minute to deny Kalou from the left of the box…
In the 82nd minute, Kurzwa released Falcao with an acrobatic ball, but the Colombian was quickly closed down. Two minutes later, he saw his header flash just wide after deflecting off Obbadi. It was deep in stoppage time that Enyeama produced another miraculous save. He blocked a powerful effort from Falcao and then denied Rivière the follow up. There was still time for the Nigerian goalkeeper to tip over another Falcao effort. After taking their chances, Lille become the first side to defeat AS Monaco FC this season at the end of a frustrating evening for Claudio Ranieri's men. Les Rouge et Blanc deserved so much more given the way the game went and they must now pick themselves up ahead of next Friday's match versus Evian...
