Germain beats Lopes
While Les Lyonnais had the first chance of the match with that free-kick just moments after kick-off, it was Les Rouge et Blanc who were quickly in front on the scoreboard. With just four minutes on the clock, Germain beat Lopes from close range after being set up by Berbatov. Les Lyonnais responded immediately through Briand, but he was blocked by Isimat-Mirin inside the penalty box. Lacazette followed up but his lob flew over the crossbar (6'). It was end to end stuff and Kurzawa picked out Germain with a fabulous pass. This time, Lopes palmed out the Monégasque captain's effort (7'). Germain was back in the thick of the action in the 20th minute, released by Berbatov, he and James got in each other's way and the chance went begging.
Briand and James exchange goals
Just before the half-hour, Kurzawa charged down the left flank, before switching play to Germain who crossed hard across the face of goal where Berbatov failed to add the finishing touch. But James followed in and scored into the empty net (27')! OL were stunned, but refused to give in and Briand reduced the arrears five minutes later from an excellent Miguel Lopes cross. Les Lyonnais then had a great chance to equalise with a generous indirect free-kick inside the box (41'). The Monégasque wall did its job. Just before the break, James earned a promising free-kick, but Moutinho missed the target.
Berbatov makes the break
After the restart, Les Rouge et Blanc lost Kurzawa to a thigh strain, replaced by Raggi. But like in the first half, they quickly found the back of the net. James released Berbatov with a surgical pass and the Bulgarian star beat Lopes with the outside of the right-foot! But Lyon fought back again. On the hour mark, Subasic blocked Mvuemba's low shot, and then Lopes produced a great save to deny Moutinho (63'). Coming on just after Berbatov's goal, Gourcuff produced two great chances for Lyon (66' and 68'), first with a volley that shaved Subasic's right-hand post and then with a free-kick blocked by the wall.
Carvalho standing tall!
Moments after replacing Obbadi, Pi tried his luck from distance in the 74th minute, but his shot flew wide of Lopes' goal. ASM seemed in control, but a second Briand goal set up a grandstand finish. Subasic was hit in the air by Koné and Briand was on hand to score into the empty net. OL pushed hard to find an equaliser while Carvalho led his defence with a bloodied nose after contact from a corner. In stoppage time, Subasic intercepted a dangerous Lacazette cross. The wall then repelled another Gourcuff free-kick just before the final whistle! AS Monaco FC held on to record their eighth away win of the season and extend their advantage of LOSC to nine points ahead of their summit clash next weekend!
