Abidal and frustration for Les Bleus
Despite another convincing performance in the centre of defence against Georgia, Eric Abidal is yet to record a win since his return to the national team fold. Les Bleus dominated proceedings but were unable to find a way through as the match finished scoreless and France remain in second place in Group I, three points behind leaders Spain. Geoffrey Kondogbia remained on the bench for the game.
Moutinho wins ahead of Brazil in Boston
Back with the Portugal national team after recovering from his adductor strain, Joao Moutinho played the entire match against Northern Ireland. Portugal trailed twice before running out 4-2 winners, courtesy of a Ronaldo hat-trick. The result sees Portugal maintain their two-point lead over Russia in the group standings, but have played one match more than their rivals. Their next match is a friendly clash with Brazil in Boston next Wednesday. Danijel Subasic was on the bench for Croatia's draw with Serbia. The Croatian side are now five points adrift of Belgium and, barring a miracle, can start to prepare for the play-offs to qualify for Brazil 20014. They play Korea Republic in a friendly on Tuesday.
Falcao played, James scored
Colombia have all but qualified for next summer's World Cup finals after a 1-0 win over Ecuador. Radamel Falcao played and James Rodriguez netted the only goal of the game that installed Colombia in top spot of the Amsud standings, level with Sergio Romero's Argentina, who play Paraguay on Wednesday.
