Capital of the southern Austrian state of Carinthia, Klagenfurt-am-Wörthersee has a population of around 100,000. The city lies on the Glan River, surrounded by mountains and Lake Wörthersee, said to be the warmest of the Alpine lakes. Klagenfurt's 32,000-seater stadium, the HYPO GROUP Arena, hosted three matches during Euro 2008, organised jointly by Austria and Switzerland.
Eleven training sessions, one match
Klagenfurt lies close to Slovenia, Italy and Croatia and is known for its many castles, making it a popular tourist destination. It also plays host to one of the toughest events on the Ironman (triathlon) European tour! While the Red and Whites won’t be taking on anything quite so gruelling, this first stage of their pre-season preparations will see them getting back into action and up to speed. During their eight-day stay in Austria, they’ll be fitting in eleven training sessions and a friendly match. The weather outlook for the trip is uncertain.
First up: the Firefoxes
AS Monaco aren’t the first club to choose Klagenfurt as the venue for their pre-season preparations. The city boasts top class facilities, and has played host to the likes of Chelsea FC, HSV Hamburg and Schalke 04, as well as a number of national sides.
Rounding off the week, Leonardo Jardim will get a chance to see his players in action as they line up for a friendly against local outfit FC St-Veit an der Glan, who currently play in the Landesliga, Austria’s fourth tier. The Firefoxes will host AS Monaco at the compact Jacques Lemans Arena (capacity: 2,420) at 3pm on Saturday 12 July. The Monegasque delegation will head back to the Principality straight after the game, to prepare for the long journey to Columbia.
