The departure of André Amitrano

The departure of André Amitrano
AS Monaco has accepted André Amitrano's request to end his contract, which expired at the end of the season, in June 2020, early. The Club would like to warmly thank the coach, who has trained the red and white goalkeepers since 2009, for his dedication and professionalism.

From Stéphane Ruffier to Benjamin Lecomte, and obviously Danijel Subasic, to name only a few recent “n° 1″s, André Amitrano, 62, has been training the goalkeepers of AS Monaco for over ten years. However, his history with the club goes back even further, when in 1977 Gérard Banide recruited him from US Cannes-la-Bocca, a small amateur club in a popular district of the French Riviera. Then 19 years old, the one that many affectionately nicknamed “Dede”, would quickly become the understudy of another promising young goalkeeper, two years older, a certain Jean-Luc Ettori.

Back to basics

Backing up the latter for four seasons, André Amitrano would then, after winning the title of Champion of France 1982, continue his career at OGC Nice (1982-1988), then AS Cannes (1988-1994), playing in total nearly 300 professional games, before embarking on his second career as goalkeeper coach in the 1990s. Launched in this new role by Guy Lacombe, then director of the AS Cannes academy, it was by following the latter fifteen years later that André Amitrano made his return to the Principality in 2009 after experiences in Valencia, Guingamp and Rennes. Despite Lacombe’s early departure at the start of 2011, and despite the descent into Ligue 2 which followed a few months later, André Amitrano remained faithful to the post.

From Ligue 2 to a title with “Suba”

With Laurent Banide, Marco Simone, Claudio Ranieri, Leonardo Jardim and even Thierry Henry, he was a pillar of the red and white staff throughout the decade of the 2010s. Very close to his goalkeepers, “Dédé” has contributed in a big way to the success of Danijel Subasic, with AS Monaco as with the Croatian national team with whom he reached the final of the 2018 World Cup. On this subject, and with a bit of a wink, André Amitrano has trained in recent years goalkeepers for the last three finalists  of the World Cup: the Dutchman Maarten Stekelenburg, the Argentinian Sergio Romero and also “Suba”.

A standard

Having become a standard bearer in his field, André Amitrano has also specialized over time in the analysis of set pieces and very regularly gives out his advice on the matter to outfield players.
Passionate, rigorous and in perpetual research regarding his profession, such as this video filmed in November 2014, on which he used an “Vauban” barrier in an original way in training, he has contributed in a big way to the many successes of the AS Monaco in recent seasons, the promotion to Ligue 1 in 2013, the title of champion in 2017, and there are also the European epics of 2015 and 2017. As he wanted to take another direction at the start of 2020, it is with great affection that the whole club wishes him the best in his future projects.

Rise. Risk. Repeat.
