AS Monaco fall to Strasbourg

AS Monaco fall to Strasbourg
AS Monaco lost to RC Strasbourg on this 21st matchday of Ligue 1 Conforama; here is the full recap.

It was with a desire to quickly gain the upper hand over their opponents that the Red and Whites began the game. The first chances came from free kicks taken from the left side (2nd, 4th), but it was on the other side that the first big chances of the match came in the 7th minute. Gelson manages to play in Henrichs, whose shot came close to the left post of Sels. Two minutes later, Ben Yedder was a bit short of latching on to a cross from Gelson Martins, but AS Monaco seemed on the right track against an Alsatian team that did not seem up to the task.

Ajorque opens the scoring

Strasbourg were waiting for their chance and it was close to arriving when Thomasson forced a save from Lecomte in the 23rd minute. With a firm foot the Monegasque guardian warded off the danger. The pace of the match then went down a notch as the half-hour of play approached, but AS Monaco had a great chance to score from a good header from Maripán (39th). The ball went right by the Strasbourg goal, but and on the next play, the visitors opened the scoring through Ajorque who met a cross from the right. It was against the run of the game that the Alsatians thus lead at the break.

Thomasson and Mitrovic extend the lead

After the half, the Red and Whites continued to monopolize the ball without finding the breakthrough against Strasbourg. While Robert Moreno had brought on Jovetic on the hour, it was Thomasson ho troubled Lecomte with a shot across goal from the right which passed close to the woodwork (61st). Five minutes later, the Alsatian playmaker managed to beat Lecomte (66 ‘) with a shot from the left. Strasbourg would then really take off in the 73rd minute, when Mitrovic sealed the win from a corner.

Jovetic reduces the deficit

Full of confidence, Thomasson tried his luck again, but Lecomte made a good stop (76th). AS Monaco did not give up, but faced a lack of success once more in the 80th minute, when Glik hit the crossbar after a corner from Golovin and a header from Bakayoko. It was finally Jovetic who managed to score with a low shot from the right (86th). The Montenegrin marked his return to form and gave a little hope to his team, but the reaction was too late for the trend to be reversed in this meeting. AS Monaco lost 1-3 against RC Strasbourg. The next match is Tuesday evening with the reception of Saint-Etienne in the Round of 16 of the Coupe de France (20.55).
