An untouchable AS Monaco outclass Clermont and eye the podium

An untouchable AS Monaco outclass Clermont and eye the podium
Ultra-dominant from the start to the end of the match, the Rouge et Blanc quickly made the difference in a serious win at Clermont (0-2), their seventh away victory of the season.

They were on a mission in Auvergne! Superb in their commitment and in their desire, the AS Monaco players delivered a beautiful and solid victory against Clermont Foot 63 (0-2), to get a little closer to the podium. It was a win that was on the cards very early thanks to goals from Mateusz Wieteska (OG) and Breel Embolo.

The context 📅

Still undefeated in Ligue 1 since the resumption of play after the World Cup (4 wins, 2 draws), the Rouge et Blanc approached this trip to Auvergne with the firm intention of playing a complete match after dropping off in the second half against Marseille (1-1) and Auxerre (3-2). There was also the desire to bring down a team that also did not experience defeat in 2023.

There will be no problem with motivation, precisely in view of the results Clermont have had in recent weeks. They are a difficult formation to face, playing with a back five, an two players in attack, and which does not concede many chances. So it will be a challenge for us to break their resistance and not get caught in transition.

The eleven 👥

For this match, coach Philippe Clement was without Malang Sarr, Vanderson or Eliesse Ben Seghir. He nonetheless decided to once again line up in a 4-2-3-1 with Takumi Minamino in support of Breel Embolo in attack. Krépin Diatta was back on the right flank.

The scenario 🎞

There was no round of observation at the Stade Gabriel-Montpied, since the Monegasques very quickly found the net on a Caio Henrique free kick, deflected in off the head of Guillermo Maripán (0-1, 3′)! The goal was finally awarded to Mateusz Wieteska as an own goal, which did not prevent the away supporters from exulting and these 300 brave fans would soon roar to life again.

Golo’, master of assists

Indeed on the quarter hour mark, Aleksandr Golovin broke into the left side the Auvergne box, before delivering a brilliant pass to Breel Embolo at the far post, who finished from close range (0-2, 13′). It was the Tsar’s 26th assist in Ligue 1, equalling João Moutinho at the top of the ranking of AS Monaco’s best providers in the 21st century. And it was the 23rd goal this season scored by the Club in the first half. Machine!

A domination not (totally) rewarded

Very active, Embolo was even close to a killer third goal on a strong shot that was  kept out by Mory Diaw (18′). Then he missed the target (22′), just like Takumi Minamino, whose strong attempt only found the side netting (28′). There was also no success  on a curling shot by Mohamed Camara, diverted behind for a corner (37′). The ultra-dominance of Monaco therefore ended the first half with a two goal lead, as on Wednesday against Auxerre.

A complete display

Determined not to slow down when they returned from the locker room, Axel Disasi’s teammates did not concede a single shot before the hour mark. It was even the Malian midfielder who stood out again (62′). Then, Alexander Nübel fended off a dangerous cross with his fingertips, as his captain prevented a Clermont recovery (66′). But the influence of Philippe Clement’s men on the match was total.

A seventh away win!

Krépin Diatta was close to providing the 3-0 goal to Breel Embolo (74′). The Senegalese winger’s cross was a little overhit, before Kevin Volland was  denied a goal for offside (87′). Clermont then missed their first big opportunity, on a pass from Yohann Magnin to Jim Allevinah (88′).

There was more success on a header by substitute Komnen Andric (93′), nor for Khaoui (94′). The scoreboard remained unchanged and AS Monaco had their seventh away win of the season, moving provisionally to just a point off the podium. DAGHE MUNEGU! 🇲🇨
