AS Monaco in the quarterfinals

AS Monaco in the quarterfinals
AS Monaco clinched their ticket to the quarterfinals of the Coupe de la Ligue after their 1-0 win against FC Lorient.

The XI: L. Badiaschile – Jemerson, B. Badiashile, Panzo, Biancone – Tielemans, Ait Bennasser, Chadli, Faivre, Diop, Sylla.

AS Monaco earned its first win of the season at the Stade Louis II on Wednesday. After the first quarter of an hour was disputed in difficult conditions because of the heavy rain, the referee decides to suspend the meeting.

Play resumed 36 minutes later on a mopped field and in almost normal playing conditions.

Shortly after the restart, AS Monaco initiated a nice move in the middle. Yuri Tielemans was served on the left side by Nacer Chadli but could not beat Danijel Petkovic (21st). Ten minutes later, it was Romain Faivre’s turn to create the danger in the penalty area. The young Academy player took over a Chadli cross before seeing his shot blocked by the Lorient defense. Moments later, Faivre settled and shot towards goal but it was again blocked.

Despite a first half played in two parts, AS Monaco returned to the locker room after being the most dangerous team.

The Academy shines after the break

The start of the second period is balanced but it is AS Monaco that opens the scoring through Giulian Biancone in the 70th minute. After overlapping along the left side, Romain Faivre manages to serve Biancone free of any defenders on the right side. The latter cuts back in the penalty area and shoots into the left side to beat Petkovic for what would be the game winner.

Willem Geubbels was close to doubling the lead in the 77th. After a technical sequence from Bennasser for 25 meters, the young player fires with one touch but his shot is stopped at close range. Not successful in his attempt, Geubbels then found the post ten minutes later after a nice shot from the edge of the box.

Another player of the Academy that shined this Wednesday night — Loïc Badiashile — put his team in a great spot with a save on Le Goff. The Rouge et Blanc win (1-0) and continue their journey in the Coupe de la Ligue.

Next game for Thierry Henry’s men — Saturday at 9 pm, hosting Guingamp for the last game of the year.

Rise. Risk. Repeat.
