The crazy stats of AS Monaco in Ligue 1 since September

The crazy stats of AS Monaco in Ligue 1 since September
Weighed down by the numerous red cards at the very start of the season, the Rouge et Blanc have since been on an almost flawless run in the league, moving into the top spots over this period. Here's the proof in numbers.

They’ve been unstoppable in 2023! Unbeaten since Ligue 1 resumed after the World Cup in Auxerre (a 3-2 win), AS Monaco continued their great run by beating Paris Saint-Germain Saturday at the Stade Louis-II (3-1). It’s another victory, their sixth in eight rounds (with two draws), which has allowed Philippe Clement’s men to climb, for the first time this season, onto the podium.

Top in Ligue 1 in this period 🥇

And for good reason, becasue after a difficult start to the league season, marked by three sendings-off over the first five rounds of Ligue 1, the Rouge et Blanc have been on nearly-champion level run since then. With a total of 42 points from 54 possible, the Principality club is quite simply the leader over thus period, ahead of PSG (41), OM (36) and Lille (34). The run is indeed impressive with 13 wins, three draws and two narrow defeats.

I don't really know how to explain the fact that we have been so good in the second half of the season. This is the third season that it's been like this. But we are only at the beginning of this second part of the season, and there are still a lot of games. Beating Paris does not mean that we are in the running for the top of the table. It remains a competitive Ligue 1 and there are still a lot of teams behind us.

More than two goals scored per match ⚽

Especially since in the meantime, the Monegasques have been particularly solid, in front and at the back. After conceding 11 goals in just five games, they have only conceded 19 times in… 18 matches! Their offensive potential has proved to be even more enormous, led by the duo of Wissam Ben Yedder and Breel Embolo. Indeed, the Club has found the net 44 times over these 18 games, an average of 2.44 goals!

An on-fire attacking partnership! 🔥

This is at least nine more than their nearest pursuer over the period (Rennes, 35). And among these 44 goals, the “Wissambolo” duo has been involved 30 times (25 goals, 5 assists). It is therefore not surprising to find our two scorers among the top 10 in Ligue 1 with 14 for Captain’ Wiss after his double against Paris (3 assists), and 12 for Magic’ Breel (2 assists).

It's only early February, and Breel has already surpassed his career high in single-season goals (11). I believe that Wissam has already scored 17 times in all competitions and made also has assists, with 12 goals in all competitions for Breel, who has delivered four assists. People often talk to me about combining the two, but I wonder if they would have scored so much if they were always together on the pitch.

Echoes of Trezeguet and Simone? 🔙

By the end of the season, the Monegasque duo could thus become the first to score more than twenty goals each, since David Trezeguet (22) and Marco Simone (21) in 1999-2000. Currently, there is in any case no equal in L1, not even Mbappé and Neymar (25 goals or assists, against 26 for Ben Yedder-Embolo). But what impresses even more now is the team’s ability to outclass its opponent in the first half of games.

The first half: A Monégasque Specialty⌚

With 21 goals scored in the first half since September 4 and the win in the Derby against Nice (1-0), AS Monaco are one of the teams that strikes the earliest in France (26 goals in all). It’s even been more since the new year: over the last five league matches, Philippe Clement’s players have scored 13 times! They’re an impressive attack, with danger that comes from everywhere, as evidenced by the 14 different scorers and 13 assist providers since the start of league play.

Two “assist masters” at your service 🎯

Once more, two players stand out: Caio Henrique (7) and Aleksandr Golovin (6). Very skilful on set pieces, the two friends of the Rouge et Blanc left flank have made themselves a formidable weapon recently, as on the goal scored by Memo Maripán in Clermont two weeks ago (in a 2-0 win). Thanks to this ability in the last pass, AS Monaco have already scored 12 headed goals in Ligue 1 this season.

It's an important stat because I like to play with an attacking style of play. All my players have a winning mentality and don't just play to stop the opposition. They believe in themselves and their teammates. (…) It is true that we do everything to score while trying to be solid defensively too. You have to find the right balance, and that's what I've seen in recent weeks.

A place on the podium? 📈

This was at least five more than any other team in the top flight before the victory against PSG, noted our partner Opta. As a result, the Club now has 47 points after 23 league games and has climbed into third place for the first time this season. Since the beginning of three points for a victory in 1994, only one of the 17 teams with this total at this stage of the competition has not finished in the Top 3 of the elite.

A run that lasts and lasts…

A statistic that we would like to see confirmed on June 3, after a visit from Toulouse. Until then, it is hoped that the Rouge et Blanc will keep up another run: AS Monaco are still the only team in Europe to have scored at least one goal in their last 33 league outings. Machines!

Rise. Risk. Repeat.
