Henri Biancheri has passed on

Henri Biancheri has passed on
It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Henri Biancheri this Sunday, December 1st. The former player and sporting director of AS Monaco was 87 years old, AS Monaco loses one of the heroes of its early success at the dawn of the '60s.

May 15, 1960, AS Saint-Etienne had just scored a second time against AS Monaco in the final of the Coupe de France. Les Verts lead 2-1 and the victory seemed certain for them. While there are only two minutes left, Henri Biancheri equalizes with a sumptuous free-kick. After this goal, the Red and Whites would score twice more during extra time, winning the first national trophy in their history.

An epic match whose 60th birthday is celebrated this season and in which, as you can understand, Henri Biancheri was one of the major players. Born in Marseille on July 30, 1932, the midfielder took classes at the SMUC, before being recruited by FC Sochaux in 1950 at the age of 18. After breaking through with the eastern club, he joined Angers in 1954, then AS Monaco in 1957. At the foot of the Rock, Henri Biancheri played some of the best football of his career (261 games, 30 goals).

Three years after his arrival, in 1959-1960, he was part of the squad who won AS Monaco this first French Cup, capped twice by France and then a part of the first league title-winning side the following season (1960-1961). Henri Biancheri is a part of this generation who saw the birth of the famous Diagonale jerset and gave it from the outset its first set of honors. These golden years would be confirmed, with the double achieved in 1962-1963, the only one realized by AS Monaco to date.

After completing his career at RC Paris between 1964 and 1966, Henri Biancheri was never too far from the field, holding the position of Sporting Director of AS Monaco for many years, until 2005. Player or leader , Henri Biancheri has played a big role in the history of our club; we today send our condolences to his family and his relatives.

Rise. Risk. Repeat.
