Guillermo Maripan, the Chilean colossus
From the height of 1.93m, Guillermo Maripan embodies the future of Chile. Already holder of his position on the Chilean squad, especially during the last Copa America, the native of Vitacura, Chile has risen through the ranks to win at all the clubs where he has played.
The first steps in Chile
Guillermo Maripan’s story begins with the Universidad Católica, where he did all his training prior to his pro call-up in 2012. After a debut where he played little with his training club, the Chilean defender quickly impressed his new coach, Mario Salas. The manager did not hesitate to trust his central defender. Maripan played 27 games in the 2015/2016 season, winning the championship of Chile with his club. With the Universidad Católica since 9 years old, he wins his first trophies with professionals. Before standing out a few months later in the Chile Supercup.
From substitute to pillar of defense
While he had only played in Chile to this point, Guillermo Maripan stepped out of his comfort zone and joined Alaves of La Liga for the 2017/2018 season. However, the start with the Basque club is difficult, and the native of Vitacura plays little, changing managers shortly after his arrival. But the following year, Maripan takes advantage of the injury to Rodrigo Ely, securing playing time. He seized the opportunity wonderfully, and “Memo” does not let go of his place in the team. He plays 23 league games with Alaves and is one of the mainstays of the side. The impressive season earned him a call for the Copa America 2019 with Chile.
Unavoidable in selection
Selected for the first time with Chile in 2017, Guillermo Maripan recorded 15 selections with La Roja that year. A golden generation of Chile had emerged, winning the Copa America twice in a row in 2015 and 2016. Memo waited for his time and does not disappoint. He will play every game with Chile in the most recent Copa America. In a back four or three, the Chilean giant has become a constant for Reinaldo Rueda. He compliments Gary Medel well, and the 25-year-old defender represents the future of the Chilean defense.
