A Regrettable Defeat
On track to earn their first win of the season, the Red and White lost their hold on the game late in the first half, letting OM back into the match just before the break. Trailing by two in the second half, Les Monegasques gave everything to equalize, including Guillermo Maripan finishing the match with a bandage on his head, but the effort was futile.
Ben Yedder’s Double
Everything started well with an opening goal from Wissam Ben Yedder on a penalty given following a Kamara handball. A 1-0 lead became 2-0, 10 minutes later. After an attack led by Gelson Martins, Slimani found Ben Yedder in the box. The French international fooled Steve Mandanda and scored, hitting the empty net (26′). Already having scored this week with the Blues, Wissam Ben Yedder notched his third goal in two games at Stade Louis-II.
A Terrible Five Minutes
Close to leading 3-0 at the half-hour mark after Glik’s header missed over the bar of Marseille’s goal, OM got back into the match just moments later on a finish from Benedetto (38′). The Argentinean was able to score from point-blank after a perfect cross from Sanson from the right side. Caught off-guard by the goal, Leonardo Jardim’s men felt the pressure in the aftermath, conceding again to Germain on the equalizer (42′). Monaco had to start over again, level, 2-2, at the break.
A Repeat Double
OM’s momentum was confirmed after returning from the locker room. The Red and White lost Ben Yedder in the 56th minute after a tackle from Amavi. Payet scored soon thereafter on a powerful shot to the left side of the net, beating Lecomte in the 61st minute. Propelled by their newfound lead, the Marseillais added on five minutes later as Benedetto added his second of the night. Things seemed hopeless for AS Monaco.
Keita Keeps it Alive
It wasn’t over for Keita Baldé. Entering the game a few minutes earlier, the Senegalese international reduced the deficit in the 75th minute. OM then had pressure on their own hands, and the hands of Mandanda, who saved two shots in the next minute. First, he pushed Baldé’s shot away and then deflected a superb rebound from Slimani in the 77th. Monaco had barely missed their equalizer, and the OM defense would not crack in the final minutes.
