WAG : A rocket from Maicon

WAG : A rocket from Maicon
On January 22, 2005, Douglas Maicon rewarded the fans at Stade Louis-II with a goal for the history books! This is our WAG of the week and it is well worth a look!

On this day, AS Monaco hosted RC Lens on the 22nd matchday of Ligue 1. Goals from Javier Saviola and Douglas Maicon saw them win 2-0. The Brazilian right back is the key man of this match. In the 21st minute, he took the corner which saw the first goal scored by Saviola. His cross is deflected to the far post by Sébastien Squillaci, before the Argentinian turned the ball into the back of the net.

Technique and power

Then came the masterpiece of this match, a few minutes before half time. Maicon receives the ball in the middle of the field and then sets off on a fantastic run through the heart of the Lens defense. Moving like a rocket, he uses his technique and his power to  beat three opponents, before striking a powerful shot from the right corner of the area. Charles Itandje is beaten as the ball nestles into the opposition’s net!

A season of transition

Even if this 2004-2005 season remains as a transition season after the fabulous European epic of the previous campaign, Didier Deschamps’ men would still finish the championship in third, behind LOSC and OL, with a record of 15 victories, 18 draws and 5 losses.

From the Rock to the top

As for Douglas Maicon, he would play a total of 81 games with AS Monaco from 2004 to 2006, including 16 European matches, scoring 7 goals. These were two seasons in which he would reveal himself to the elite of European football, before taking off to the top. In 2006, the Brazilian international crossed the border to continue his career in Serie A at Inter Milan, with whom he won the Champions League in 2010.
