How does AS Monaco fare against Italian clubs in the Champions League?
As the club from the Principality prepares to play its last match of the League phase against Juventus, let's look back at previous meetings against Italian clubs in the Champions League.

A final showdown to conclude the league phase of the Champions League. Still very much in contention for a playoff spot, AS Monaco host Juventus at the Stade Louis-II this Wednesday (21:00), eager to secure victory and guarantee their place in the next round. But to do so, they will have to overcome their unfavourable record against Italian sides. Flashback. 🔙

Inter Milan, the first meeting of the 60s 🎞️

Fresh from their second French league title win, and their first European victory against AEK Athens, AS Monaco faced Inter Milan in the Champions League round of 16. Unfortunately, the task proved too great, and Roger Courtois’ men lost both legs, though not without putting up a fight against the eventual winners (4-1 on aggregate). This scenario would be repeated the following season with a 3-0 defeat at the Giuseppe-Meazza.

The mighty Milan deny the dream of a final 🏆

Looking forward in time now to the 1993-1994 season. After finishing second in their group behind Barcelona, the players from the Principality drew AC Milan for a spot in the final. Again, Monaco would face the team that goes on to lift the trophy a few weeks later, as they lost 3-0 after goals from Desailly, Albertini, and Massaro. Despite the elimination, this remains the first of four semi-final appearances by Monaco in this competition.

Juventus, the bogey team 🐈‍⬛

Having faced them six times, Juventus is undoubtedly the Club’s nemesis. In 1997-1998, it was the Juventini who first eliminated the Red and Whites in the semi-finals despite a 3-2 victory in the second leg (4-6 on aggregate).

Then, in the quarter-finals of the 2014-2015 season, experience, cunning, and let’s face it, a few unfavourable decisions proved too much for Monaco, who lost 1-0 on aggregate. Finally, the golden generation of 2016-2017 were unable to progress beyond the semi-finals, suffering two defeats (1-4 in the end).

Bologna, and the art of defying the odds 💪

Last season, AS Monaco faced an Italian club: Bologna. At the Renato Dall’Ara stadium, where the Italians were unbeaten in Europe (28 matches without defeat), the Red and Whites defied the odds this time, winning 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Thilo Kehrer. This victory was crucial, as ten points from four matches confirmed their excellent start to the campaign.
