Difficult to digest. Despite a perfect start to the match and chances to increase the lead, AS Monaco conceded a bitter defeat against Lyon at Groupama Stadium (3-1). It was a setback that the Belgian coach as well as Axel Disasi and Youssouf Fofana tried to analyze with the media post-match.🎙
Hello coach. How do you feel after this defeat?
We have to look at ourselves, and not look around. Tonight, however, we started this match perfectly with the penalty and the goal in the second minute. But not only that, because afterwards we had the best chances. We had good organization, good passing patterns and chances. And then we think about conceding the goal it hurt us mentally. Which meant that in the second period we were not the same team; that must not happen.
How do you get back to basics?
We have a very young squad with less experience when it comes to dealing with difficulties. Now we have two more games to play and our destiny is in our hands. Unfortunately when you put your head down, you can’t win a match. Once again, there are two big matches left in which to show a completely different face.
The trip to Rennes will be a veritable final…
It’s up to me to pick the players who are mentally the strongest for these last two battles. It is not only the physical and technical qualities that will decide this. I want to see a clear reaction next week from my players. Yes we can have regrets tonight and over some of the big games. We are missing a little something at the moment. But again, there are two games left in which to react.
What was the difference tonight?
We conceded three goals with enough players in the area to defend against them. We lacked aggressiveness in certain phases of play. And then it was a decisive match for Lyon too. The players were aware of that, but it doesn’t change the fact that you have to know how to respond mentally when you concede a goal. We wanted to win this game today. It will be the same until the end of the season. It is important that we have our destiny in our hands. But we must make good on it!
The reactions of Axel Disasi and Youssouf Fofana
“We had an ideal start to the match by opening the scoring. In the first half, we had a lot of chances that we didn’t manage to convert. In the second, they got stronger and were more We are aware that the period is complicated to live, whether for us or our supporters.
As competitors, this kind of performance generates nervousness and frustration. There are still two games left, including a trip to face a direct competitor, Stade Rennais, with a chance to secure fourth place. We will do everything to bounce back.”
“There is the start that we should retain, as we showed good pressing and concentration. If we had gone into the locker room at halftime with a two or three goal lead, the match would be over. It’s as if the match was lost. We were more dangerous than them but less efficient. We work a lot on this in training but we can’t reproduce it in matches. We have to secure fourth place now.”
