The title, a comeback, a first… The team's most beautiful victories since returning to Ligue 1
Ce samedi en s’imposant face à l’Olympique de Marseille, les Rouge et Blanc ont signé un 200e succès depuis la remontée en Ligue 1. Focus sur sept victoires marquantes en championnat lors de ces dix dernières années.

AS Monaco recorded a milestone win against Marseille on Saturday (3-2). In addition to top spot having been recovered in this Mediterranean derby, the Principality club obtained its 200th success since returning to the top flight in 2013. It’s a number that only Paris Saint-Germain has so far reached on the period (270).

Nantes, a favorite victim

Winners of 53% of their matches over the last 10 years, the Rouge et Blanc therefore have the second best win ratio in the league, helped by certain teams. For example, they have won 14 times against Nantes, their favorite prey, 12 times against Angers, and even 11 times against Nice. Here’s a look back at seven of them which are, for us, the most significant wins since the 2013-2014 season. Flashback. 🔙

August 10, 2013: Bordeaux 0-2 AS Monaco
The first one 👍

Let’s start by talking about the very first victory obtained. And it did not take long in coming since it arrived on the first day, in August 2013, on a trip to face Girondins de Bordeaux, where the Monegasques, led in particular by Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez, worked hard to find the winning formula.

They waited until the 82nd minute, the moment chosen by Emmanuel Rivière, who had come on a few minutes earlier, to score with a shot across Then, “El Tigre” increased the gap to score his first goal under his new colors in the fashion of a pure attacker. It was a first win in a season which saw AS Monaco return to the Champions League at the end of it.

October 1, 2016: FC Metz 0-7 AS Monaco
The festival 🎇

Let’s move forward in time and head towards the 2016-2017 season. It was historic in every way with an eighth French league title and a run to the Champions League semifinals, as the Principality club inflicted several beatings on their opponents (6-0 vs Nancy, 6-2 vs Montpellier, 4-0 vs Marseille in particular).

But the most beautiful is certainly the one inflicted on Metz on the pitch at the Stade Saint-Symphorien. In a strong display, the Rouge et Blanc scored a whopping seven goals through Lemar, Germain, Silva, Fabinho, Carrillo and Boschilia on two occasions. The final score was 7-0 and it was the biggest away victory in the history of AS Monaco!

May 17, 2017 : AS Monaco 2-0 Saint-Etienne
The eighth title 🏆

When we talk about the greatest victories, how can we not mention the one which sealed the eighth title for the team in 2017? Neck and neck with PSG for almost the entire season, the Rouge et Blanc had a first chance to win the title in a postponed match against Saint-Etienne. And Leonardo Jardim’s side didn’t miss their chance.

Dominant, they opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour of play through Kylian Mbappé, before Valère Germain closed out the match in added time. It was two #MadeInLaDiagonale goals, a symbolic ahievement, which allowed the Stade Louis-II to be filled with happiness in a season which would see AS Monaco win 30 matches. A record in its history!

Feburary 4, 2018: AS Monaco 3-2 Olympique Lyonnais
The remontada 📈

The following season, the Monegasques hard fought to access the Champions League. At the dawn of the 24th round, they are fourth, one point behind Marseille and Lyon. This was good, though, as they were set to face the latter in order to allow them to move ahead. But everything did not go as planned, they lost Danijel Subasic to injury and were 2-0 down inside the half hour mark.

This is where the magic of football happens. Keita Baldé first reduced the score then Radamel Falcao equalized from the penalty spot. With courage and great mental strength following the sending off of the first scorer in the 45th minute, the Principality club beat the Rhône side thanks to Rony Lopes netting with a sublime strike across goal in the 88th minute. It was an essential comeback since they would finish… two points ahead of OL at the end of the season.

May 18, 2019: AS Monaco 2-0 Amiens
Sealing survival 🥵

Almost two years to the day after the eighth title, La Diagonale was fighting this time not to go down. In the first safety place, they are tied with the 18th placed side before the start of the 37th matchday which saw them host Amiens, and they were only two points ahead. Suffice to say that a victory would ensures safety. And that’s what they would do!

In front of a Stade Louis-II that was well-filled for a match which had an element of fear with the presence of more than 10,000 supporters, Falcao opened the scoring with a header from a corner from Aleksandr Golovin, before the Russian doubled the lead in the last minutes. This win then puts them three points ahead of the first relegation place, a lead which will prove sufficient ahead of the final match of the season.

September 13, 2020: AS Monaco 2-1 Nantes
On target🎯

After a season interrupted by Covid-19 and a ninth place finish, the AS Monaco players managed to get the 2020-2021 season off to a good start. With a draw and a victory, they were at the top of the table before hosting Nantes at the Stade Louis-II, as part of the third matchday.

Lined up in a 4-4-2 by Niko Kovac, they rapidly opened the scoring through Sofiane Diop, who scored his first goal in Rouge et Blanc. Pegged back on the hour by Ludovic Blas, they quickly responded through Willem Geubbels, who also scored for the first time. It was thus a 2-1 win but also the team’s 1000th in Ligue 1 in the Club’s history!

September 30, 2023: Monaco 3-2 Marseille
A 200th win 🆕

Let’s end this anthology of the most beautiful victories with the most recent victory, against Marseille. At the end of a crazy match and after being behind twice, AS Monaco won at the Stade Louis-II (3-2). Led by Maghnes Akliouche who had a great night, with two goals and an assist, the Rouge et Blanc  bounced back perfectly from a loss against Nice.

It was a 200th victory with a special flavor since they regained top spot at the same time, at the end of the seventh round of play. See you now in a few seasons for the symbolic milestone of 300!🔜

Rise. Risk. Repeat.
