Ismail Jakobs: “I feel very comfortable in this style of play”
After scoring then turning provider before the international break in the victory against Reims (1-3), the Senegalese left wingback spoke with the media to discuss his play as well as the visit of Metz, 48 hours before the match.

After logically being named MVP of the win in Reims (1-3), he flew off to join the Lions of Teranga. scorer of the opener – his first goal in the colors of AS Monaco – and after setting up Wissam Ben Yedder, Ismail Jakobs impressed on the left flank for the Rouge et Blanc at the Stade Auguste-Delaune. It is therefore to discuss his current form and the next match, against Metz at the Stade Louis-II (Sunday, 5:05 p.m.), that the Monegasque number 14 spoke with the media today. 🎙

His new status

First of all I would like to have a thought for Caio Henrique, who is obviously going through a very difficult situation. I was very sad for him when we found out about his injury. As for me, I try to take my chances and meet expectations on the pitch. I want to show what I can do and I’m happy to be able to play. I really want to prove that people can trust me.

These kinds of matches give you a lot of confidence, whether before going on internnational duty or not. I am very happy with the way I played, but to be honest I am already looking forward to Sunday's match against Metz.
Ismail JakobsAbout his performance against Reims

Metz, a trap match?

It’s a very tough match that awaits us on Sunday, a real fight against a promoted team, especially after this international break when many of us went on international duty. We will obviously have to respect Les Messins, especially since we had difficulty playing well after the break last year. We will have to be 100% concentrated and focused to win.

His performance against Reims

These kinds of matches give you a lot of confidence, whether before going on internnational duty or not. I am very happy with the way I played, but to be honest I am already looking forward to Sunday’s match against Metz. Reims is already behind me. In any case, I think it helps you play well when you have a sense of rhythm. It is obvious that it is easier to play from the start, rather than to attack straight away when you come on for the last 20 minutes of a match.

It’s true that I feel good in this role as a wingback, which means that I can play more offensively. It’s also the system that demands that, and I feel comfortable there. The coach has a philosophy and a different way of playing from last season.

His first goal for AS Monaco

As I said, a goal always gives a lot of confidence, and it was important for me to score my first. But once again on Sunday no one will think about this goal anymore when we play against Metz. On the other hand, I will give everything to have another very good match. We must continue to work like this.

His attacking style

The left-back position involves knowing how to do both, defending and attacking. And it’s true that I feel good in this role as a wingback, which means that I can play more offensively. It’s also the system that demands that, and I feel comfortable there. The coach has a philosophy and a different way of playing from last season. This therefore allows me to be decisive for the team, whether by providing assists or by scoring like in Reims.

It is a great pride for me to represent Senegal, and it would obviously be a dream to compete in a competition like the Africa Cup of Nations. I think we have a very good team, a very good group this year.

Senegal and AFCON

It is a great pride for me to represent Senegal, and it would obviously be a dream to compete in a competition like the Africa Cup of Nations. I think we have a very good team, a very good group this year. So I really hope we can win this trophy again, after the victory in 2022.
