They passed their first home European test of the season with flying colours. Taking on current Bundesliga third-placed side SC Freiburg on Matchday 2 of the UEFA Conference League, AS Monaco showed great character to claim a second consecutive victory (3-0). A commanding success secured at the Stade Louis-II in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II and Club President Dmitry Rybolovlev. Match report ✍️
The opening exchanges are cautious, although Golo’ manages to pick out Mathys Detourbet in behind the defence, only for the forward to be denied by Mio Backhaus, having strayed offside (3’). The Germans struggle to test the target, whether through their captain Eggestein from distance (1’) or Kübler with a header from a free-kick (17’). The first real opportunity eventually arrives from a delicate chipped pass by Edan Diop, met on the volley by Maghnes Akliouche Coulibaly, but the Freiburg goalkeeper reacts well to turn it away (24’).
Paris Brunner works his magic 🪄
The visiting shot-stopper is called into action again moments later, this time to deny Paris Brunner after a fine pass from Aleksandr Golovin (27’). But it is only a matter of time for the Germany youth international, who races through on goal after a sublime sombrero flick before firing an unstoppable effort into the net just before half-time (1-0, 45’+2)! It is an eighth goal of the season for Monaco’s number 29, who once again produces a moment of brilliance.
Hrádecký shines on his line 🧤
Unlike the first half, the restart is lively and Lukáš Hrádecký is forced into a superb double save on his goal line from Kübler, who is first to react from a corner (48’). The first substitutions soon follow and, with his very first touch, Anis Soubeir sets up Paris Brunner once again, only for Backhaus to get down well to his left and make the stop (58’). Freiburg respond in turn, however, and their right-back goes close again, this time seeing his header from a corner drift wide of the target (62’).
Lamine Camara doubles the advantage 🎯
The changes continue and slightly disrupt the rhythm of the match. But after winning possession high up the pitch, Flávio Nazinho leads a counter-attack and sees Ansu Fati’s effort saved by Backhaus, who can do nothing about Lamine Camara’s follow-up finish (2-0, 83’)! It is the Senegal international’s second goal of the 2026-2027 campaign, having already found the net from distance in the first-leg play-off victory away to Górnik Zabrze (3-2).
Ansu Fati puts the gloss on it 🎆
Julian Schuster’s side suffer another blow when the 2025 African champion delivers a cross towards Ansu Fati, who controls brilliantly with his back to goal before steering the ball into the bottom corner (3-0, 91’)! That wraps it up as AS Monaco record a comfortable victory over Freiburg and move up to sixth place in the UEFA Conference League standings thanks to a second win of the campaign. DAGHE MUNEGU!!! 🇲🇨
