Adi Hütter: “We were the better team tonight”

Adi Hütter: “We were the better team tonight”
Of mixed emotions after a draw at the Stade Vélodrome despite two sendings-off and with AS Monaco having been ahead twice (2-2), the Austrian manager looked back at the match at a press conference.

It was a valiant but infuriating point at the same time. In front from early in the match and at half-time, the Rouge et Blanc finally ended up sharing the points against Olympique de Marseille, after a match marked by two sendings-off for the Monegasques. (2-2). It was a crazy outcome, that Adi Hütter spoke with after the match to the media.🎙️

I am responsible for my team, and I want above all to compliment my players for the play the produced this evening and for their reaction after certain moments of the match which unduly influenced the outcome.
Adi HütterManager, AS Monaco

Good evening coach. What did you think of certain decisions?

I don’t want to talk too much about the refereeing of the match this evening. I am responsible for my team, and I want above all to compliment my players for the play the produced this evening and for their reaction after certain moments of the match which unduly influenced the outcome.

Can we talk about this being a benchmark match at the start of the year?

I think everyone in the Stade Vélodrome saw that we were the better team in the first half hour of play. The red card changed a lot, of course, but we continued to push, to play well and agressively .

We even deserved a second goal in my opinion, with a few good chances. We really were the best with equal numbers today, but the decisions made it impossible to win this match. If we were 10 against 10, maybe the result would have been different.

Your players showed a lot of character to bring home this point…

I repeat, my players played at a great level tonight, and they deserved better. But I want to see my team play with 11 against 11 in a match like that, not at a  numerical disadvantage. For me, there should have been no red card for Guillermo Maripán.

We knew that Pau Lopez is a great goalkeeper with the ball, and that he takes risks when building play. So we had to put strong pressure on the Marseille goal. Maghnes was in charge of marking their number 6, and Wissam of pressing the goalkeeper. There was a lot of pressing on our part, and in particular a great job from done Youssouf and Denis.

The foul on Kassoum Ouattara, who is hit at the top of this knee, this was also a red card, in my opinion. When compared with that of Denis Zakaria, I admit I don’t understand. Once again, everyone will have their own opinion, I do not want to comment further on the refereeing decisions.

Even with ten men, you made attacking chamges by staying with three in front.

We achieved very well what we had worked on this week. I think it was indeed a great performance, one of the best matches of our season. We are on the right path and I hope that we will show good things in this second part of the season.

Rise. Risk. Repeat.
