Their unbeaten run in the league continues. Despite being dominant for much of the game, AS Monaco were not rewarded for all their efforts as they were held to a draw by Toulouse on Matchday 6 of Ligue 1 McDonald’s (2-2). With President Dmitry Rybolovlev in attendance at the Stade Louis-II, the result nevertheless allowed them to reclaim top spot in the table. Match report ✍️
The Rouge et Blanc dominated the opening stages of this match, which was dedicated to Pink October, pushing into Toulouse’s half and enjoying the lion’s share of possession. After a lengthy spell of possession, they created the first chance through Mathys Detourbet, whose effort struck the crossbar (15’). Moments later, a header from Flávio Nazinho was cleared off the line by an opposing defender (17’).
Golovin and Diop combine to perfection 🤝
The game then became a little more balanced, with Toulouse creating two long-range opportunities through Thomas Jörgensen (25’) and Casper Tengstedt (28’), neither of which troubled Lukas Hradecký. However, it was Monaco who broke the deadlock shortly afterwards, as Edan Diop rose to head home a cross from Aleksandr Golovin (1-0, 29’). It was his second goal in the Diagonale shirt and the Russian’s third assist of the season.
Abline produces a moment of magic to double the lead 🤯
After the opener, Toulouse looked to respond through Jacen Russell-Rowe, whose effort went narrowly wide (34’). It sent a brief shiver through the Stade Louis-II before the stadium erupted a few minutes later, as Matthis Abline produced a superb piece of skill before firing home on the turn from 20 metres (2-0, 38’)! Scoring his first goal since joining the Club, the forward gave his side a two-goal cushion before half-time — and what a way to do it!
A difficult first 15 minutes after the break 😭
Unfortunately, Toulouse pulled one back immediately after the restart, with Casper Tengstedt converting a penalty (2-1, 48’), before Sion Oppong equalised just before the hour mark (2-2, 59’). After that difficult spell, Monaco pushed forward again, but Golo’s free-kick was saved by Guillaume Restes (66’). Filipe Luís then introduced fresh legs in a bid to find a winner, with Ansu Fati making his return to competitive action (75’). He quickly made his presence felt, with a shot blocked (81’) and a header saved (83’).
A frustrating draw, but top spot retained 🥇
The Rouge et Blanc continued to press in the closing stages, although they had to remain alert as Thomas Jörgensen’s effort was gathered by the Finnish goalkeeper (91’). The final opportunity fell to the hosts, but Folarin Balogun was unable to pick out his Spanish teammate (93’). Given how the match unfolded, AS Monaco were left frustrated by the draw, but they remain outright leaders in the table. Attention now turns to the start of the Conference League campaign with a trip to Sofia on Thursday (6:45 p.m.), before another away trip to Lorient on Sunday (5:15 p.m.) for Matchday 7 of Ligue 1.
