Brazilian coach Filipe Luís, who will celebrate his 41st birthday on August 9, joins AS Monaco following a highly successful spell in charge of CR Flamengo.
An incredible quadruple in 2025 🏆
Under his leadership, the Rio de Janeiro club won several major trophies, including the 2024 Copa do Brasil, the 2025 Supercopa do Brasil, the 2025 Campeonato Carioca, the 2025 Brazilian Championship, and the prestigious Copa Libertadores in 2025. Across two seasons at the helm of the first team, he recorded 62 wins, 21 draws, and 16 defeats. These achievements earned him the title of South American Coach of the Year in 2025.
A coaching career that began in Youth development 👶
The former Brazilian international defender began his coaching career within Flamengo’s academy, where he quickly made a name for himself with the youth teams, notably winning the U20 Intercontinental Cup. Those results are a natural continuation of a distinguished playing career under some of the game’s most renowned managers.
An impressive trophy cabinet as a player 🏅
A former full-back, Filipe Luís notably played for Atlético de Madrid (333 appearances) under Diego Simeone, winning the 2014 La Liga title, the 2013 Copa del Rey, and two UEFA Europa League trophies (2012 and 2018).
He also represented Chelsea FC under José Mourinho, winning the Premier League in 2015, before concluding his playing career at CR Flamengo, where he added two Copa Libertadores titles (2019 and 2022) to his honours list. With the Brazilian national team (44 caps), the former left-back also won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2019 Copa América.
A strong support staff alongside him 🤝
Filipe Luís arrives alongside Ivan Palanco (Assistant Coach) and Diogo Linhares (Fitness Coach), both of whom were already part of his coaching staff at Flamengo. The coaching staff will also include Antony Santiago (Assistant Coach), who previously worked at the club as Head of Tactical Analysis, as well as goalkeeping coach Jyri Nieminen, formerly of Feyenoord Rotterdam and well acquainted with Lukáš Hrádecký from his time as goalkeeping coach for the Finland national team.
Following two days of medical and fitness testing for the first-team squad, Filipe Luís will lead his first training session on Wednesday morning at the Performance Centre, opening a new chapter in the history of AS Monaco.
