Road Warriors: The stats behind AS Monaco's success away from home
Next up for our Monegasques is a trip to Marseille and a chance to continue our good form away from the Stade Louis-II. Undefeated on the road since October 23 and a tough 4-3 loss in Lille, the Rouge et Blanc want to extend this unbeaten run against on Saturday evening in the big match of the 20th round of Ligue 1. Here’s how they’ve done it in France… and even in Europe!
One of the best ratios in the Big 5 leagues
With twenty points from nine away games, AS Monaco are among the best in Europe this season. Indeed, among the Big 5 clubs – excluding Ligue 1 – only Arsenal (25 points in 10 games), Napoli (25 points in 10 games), Real Madrid (24 points in 10 games), Atalanta and Roma (21 points in 10 games) as well as FC Barcelona and Real Sociedad (21 points) are ahead of the teammates of Wissam Ben Yedder.
To situate the level of performance of AS Monaco among the seven clubs mentioned, three are currently at the top of their leagues (Napoli, Arsenal and Barcelona). Two of these have also played one more match away from home. Only Barcelona (eight games played away from the Camp Nou) is an exception.
With six wins, two drawa, and just a single defeat, the performances of AS Monaco away from home have been remarkable. By way of comparison, in as many games last season, the Rouge et Blanc only picked up eleven points, almost half as many as the current season!
A brilliant attack
You have no doubt heard of the formidable duo “Wissambolo“, no? If the two have combined for 21 league goals between them (11 for Ben Yedder, 10 for Embolo), contributing to AS Monaco’s fine second place in the Ligue 1 attacking table this season (42 goals) , it is the entire team that has shown its efficiency.
And for good reason: with 19 goals scored on the road since August, the Monegasques are among the best attacks in Europe away from home in 2022-2023. Philippe Clement’s men have the fifth-best attack on the continent, behind Paris Saint-Germain (25 goals), Bayern Munich (24) Real Madrid (22) and the duo of Arsenal and Napoli duo (20). Even Manchester City have not as successful as the Monegasques (15). That’s really saying something!
A stingy defence
If AS Monaco has only one defeat away from the Stade Louis-II this season, it is therefore no coincidence. Because in addition to being effective offensively, the teammates of Alexander Nübel know how to be solid in the key moments of a match, as evidenced by this statistic: the Rouge et Blanc have not conceded a goal during the first quarter of an hour of each half (0-15′ and 46-60′).
Better still, AS Monaco is the only Ligue 1 team not to have reached halftime trailing (three times ahead, six times tied). Strong. Facing OM this Saturday, we will therefore have to continue this magnificent momentum to leave Bouches-du-Rhône with a good result in hand. Daghe!
