Three wins in three European outings. Already victorious in Sofia and against Freiburg, the AS Monaco players confirmed their flying start in the Conference League by getting the better of Danish side FC Nordsjælland at the foot of the Rock. A convincing victory secured at the Stade Louis-II in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II and President Dmitry Rybolovlev. Match report ✍️
The context 📅
Following a very strong start to their Conference League campaign with wins away to CSKA Sofia (2-3) and at home against SC Freiburg (3-0), the Rouge et Blanc took on Nordsjælland in the Principality with the aim of maintaining a perfect record. Caution was still required against unfamiliar opposition, however, as this marked the very first meeting between the Principality club and a Danish side across all European competitions.
"They have a very clear way of playing and a well-defined identity, particularly in the way they press high and defend very compactly. They also have a very clear philosophy on the ball, taking a lot of risks by playing out from the back, for example. What is certain is that it will be a very intense match; we will have to run a lot, fight, and be combative because they play good football."
Filipe Luís, on Nordsjælland
The lineup 👥
To take on the Nordic outfit, coach Filipe Luís decided to rotate his squad following the defeat at Paris FC (3-1). Jordan Teze and Christian Mawissa started in defense, where Academy graduate Ilane Touré celebrated his first professional start in an official match. Having come off the bench at Jean-Bouin, Takumi Minamino and Mathys Detourbet started on the wings, while Folarin Balogun led the line in a front two.
The scenario 🎞️
The opening fifteen minutes were cagey from both teams as they sized each other up in the duels. It took until the 25th minute to see a header from Victor Nelsson following a corner, which was easily gathered by Lukáš Hrádecký.Fortunately, Monaco's first real attempt proved to be the right one: after a great driving run, Takumi Minamino picked out Mathys Detourbet unmarked at the far post (1-0)! That marked a first goal in red and white for the French winger, courtesy of the Japanese international's first assist of the season.
Inches away from doubling the lead 🤏
AS Monaco took the lead and went into the break ahead under torrential rain. The restart, however, was much livelier, and within the space of two minutes, the Rouge et Blanc saw an emphatic finish from Paris Brunner (49') and a header from 'Taki' (51') ruled out in quick succession for offside. A second goal was close, including when Folarin Balogun met a superb cross from newly introduced substitute Vanderson, only for Andreas Hansen to make a goal-line save (59').
A lively final fifteen minutes 🥵
A flurry of substitutions followed and somewhat disrupted the rhythm of the game, until a clever ball over the top from Aleksandr Golovin found Matthis Abline, who dragged his angled shot agonizingly wide (85'). The substitutes brought fresh legs, and Mamadou Coulibaly flicked on a header for Takumi Minamino, whose volley was parried away by the Danish goalkeeper (87'). The end of the match opened up, and Detourbet curled an effort wide from distance (89').
Clinical Abline makes it 3/3 for Monaco! 🎯
Ultimately, it was a powerful run in behind from the other Matthis, Abline, that sealed it, as he angled his finish perfectly to beat the opposing goalkeeper (2-0)! It was the French striker's first career European goal, wrapping up a third consecutive victory in the competition for AS Monaco and putting them joint-top of the standings alongside three other teams. DAGHE MUNEGU!!! 🇲🇨
