A dream start in the Conference League! Having already won their first two league phase matches in the competition, the Principality club secured another victory against Nordsjælland on Matchday 3 of the league phase at the Stade Louis-II (2-0). After finding the net and providing an assist, Mathys Detourbet answered reporters' questions following the final whistle, joined a few moments later by Christian Mawissa. Excerpts 🎙️
Good evening, Mathys. How do you feel after this win?
Our goal was to win this match after the defeat at Paris FC, so the job is done. We are happy, and it feels good to get back to winning ways, even if it wasn't easy! We were expecting a really tough team to play against. We tried to implement our style of play and struggled a bit in the first half, but at halftime, the coach spoke to us, gave us two or three pointers, and we managed to apply them.
Do you consider tonight to be your best performance with AS Monaco?
Yes! I think this is my benchmark performance since the start of the season because, up until now, I had been a bit shy. Tonight, I regained my confidence, I scored, and I got an assist, so it's great for the team and I'm happy for myself too. Did I see the assist coming? No, not at all (laughs)! Honestly, I was told to track back defensively, I did it, and when you do what the coach asks, you inevitably get rewarded.
How do you explain AS Monaco's ups and downs between the league and European competition in recent performances?
They are two different competitions. The league is tough, and the Conference League is too. Ultimately,we try to play our game; sometimes it clicks, and other times it works less well. But we work well and hard during the week, and I think we were rewarded for that today.
You have won your first three Conference League matches. What are the Club's objectives in the competition?
We are trying to win game by game! First, we will focus on securing qualification, and then we'll see what happens next. In any case, this victory will give the team confidence, and we will try to get back to winning ways in the league on Sunday away to Le Mans.
Christian Mawissa's reaction 💪
Good evening, Christian. What are the main takeaways from AS Monaco's victory tonight?
First of all, the clean sheet! We got back to winning ways, so that's very positive. It's true that in Ligue 1 we haven't won in several matches, so it was important to get the win today. We are already focused on what's next, and I think this has given us a lot of confidence ahead of Sunday's trip to Le Mans. The Club's ambitions in the Conference League? We are staying humble, taking it one game at a time, and looking to build momentum.
In your opinion, what was missing to open the game up even more?
We faced a good team that played in a low block.I think we respected our opponents, and on top of that, we won, so it's perfect! How do I feel playing at left-back?Honestly, I feel good. I'm versatile and I play wherever the coach needs me. It's true that in this position, especially within this system, I line up on the left, but we build out from the back as a three—meaning I'm half center-back and half full-back, so I feel comfortable there too.
You showed again tonight that you are a player who relishes physical challenges...
It's true that I'm a player who brings physicality! I put a lot of intensity into my duels, and at times I need to learn to calm down a bit, but otherwise, I think I'm doing well playing this way.
