Wilfried Singo and Côte d’Ivoire are kings of Africa!

Wilfried Singo and Côte d’Ivoire are kings of Africa!
Once again stunning in the final against Nigeria who were ahead at half-time, the Monegasque defender's Éléphants achieved their dream by winning a third continental title.

It was the biggest success of his young career! It was a miraculous run after a chaotic first round for the host country as they finished in third place in their group, then came close to an exit in each knockout match, but Wilfried Singo finally lifted the most prestigious trophy for an African footballer. At the end of yet another meeting with a crazy finish the 2024 AFCON, Côte d’Ivoire won against Nigeria (1-2).

A slight delay in getting started

However, it was the Super Eagles who controlled the first moments of the final, in the heart of a roaring Stade Alassane Ouattara . It was even the Nigerian captain and central defender, William Troost-Ekong, who opened the scoring on a corner delivered by the former Gunner, Alex Iwobi (1-0, 38′). Half-time came with this score, and the supporters of Les Éléphants begin to doubt their luck.

Adingra, the X factor

But like the competition, which has been wild from start to finish, generating strong emotions and Hollywood-like scenarios, the hosts would come back in to the game. On a corner delivered by one of the revelations of this tournament, Simon Adingra, Franck Kessié leveled the score with a header (1-1, 62′). This is when the match turned wild… again! Reinforced by the entry of Wilfried Singo in the 70the minute, Côte d’Ivoire stood strong.

Another wondergoal from Sébastien Haller

They did this until a new flash of genius from the Brighton attacking midfielder, who turned his defender on the flank, before crossing for Sébastien Haller who cut in at the near post (1-2, 81′). Having recovered from cancer barely a year ago, the striker trained at AJ Auxerre lifted the entire country! The last minutes were hard-fought, but could unsettle a team that had literally been resurrected.

I didn't have time to talk to him and congratulate him but I think he will celebrate this title with his whole country. We are very happy for him. We can't wait for him to come back because he is a very important player for us.

Wilfried and Côte d’Ivoire are champions!

We then had to wait until the 98th minute of play, when the final whistle sounded, to release an explosion of joy within the confines of Abidjan, the Ivorian capital. It was job done as the host country of the Africa Cup of Nations had won its third title in the competition, giving Wilfried Singo his first major title in his career!

Incidentally, it was a second derby won in the same evening against Terem Moffi and Nigeria, after AS Monaco had done the same against Nice (2-3). With congratulations from his teammates and the coach, who will have had a special birthday. Daghe Wilfried! 🇨🇮 🌍
