Eliesse Ben Seghir is the MVP of the win over Strasbourg!

Eliesse Ben Seghir is the MVP of the win over Strasbourg!
Scorer and also involved in the first goal, the young midfielder from the Academy was elected MVP on the AS Monaco App, just ahead of another #MadeInLaDiagonale player, Edan Diop.

The Academy distinguished itself again on Sunday against Strasbourg! In a crazy match with seven goals between the two teams, AS Monaco finally managed to get the upper hand over the brave Alsatians thanks to a solid second half (4-3). Two of the heroes of the evening, Eliesse Ben Seghir and Edan Diop were then in competition for the title of Match MVP on the AS Monaco App, and it was ultimately the first of these who was honoured.

An in-form display

Playing behind Wissam Ben Yedder, he was coming off a strong display with the French U-19s in the Elite Tour and was soon involved in Vanderson’s opener. It is indeed he who played the last pass, but due to a favorable deflection for the Brazilian, it unfortunately could not be counted as an assist by the LFP.

With 32 touches, two recoveries and five fouls suffered – the most in the match – in just 57 minutes, Eliesse Ben Seghir also allowed his team to level the game at 2-2. On a ball poorly cleared by Habib Diallo, the number 44 of the Rouge et Blanc reacted quickly with his left foot to beat Matz Sels.

Meilleur buteur parmi les joueurs nés en 2005

It was his fourth goal of the season which places him as the top scorer in the five major European leagues among players born in 2005 or later, tied with Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, according to our stats partner Opta. He also becomes the youngest player to score four goals in Ligue 1 (18 years and 45 days) since Kylian Mbappé did so in 2016 (at 17 years and 349 days). And he was, of course, playing for… AS Monaco.

But this Sunday, he is not the only #MadeInLaDiagonale player to have distinguished himself. On at halftime, it only took 13 minutes for Edan Diop to also find the net. Well found on the right side of the area by Aleksandr Golovin on a counter-attack, the player from Tours did not hesitate and scored his first professional goal with his right foot.

Today, they made the difference at times when we were having difficulty, and it shows the squad we have. I am happy for them because they are working well on a daily basis and integrating very well. I hope they will continue to score lots of goals. We are lucky to have them with us, we will have to rely on them to hope for something come the end of the season.

He finishes just ahead of Edan Diop

With Eliesse and he both scoring, it is the first time that two players aged under 20 at the time of the match have scored for the Principality club in the same Ligue 1 match since September 20, 2015 against Lorient (Thomas Lemar and Almamy Touré).

It is therefore logical to find the two Academy players at the top of the MVP voting on the AS Monaco App, with a slight advantage for the player from Gassin (30%) ahead of Edan’s 27%. In doing so, he won his fourth MVP of the season. Bravo to both! 👏
